The Cummins Home

This home, presently owned by Nancy Pfenning, was originally built by Theodore A. Cummins. It is believed that this home was built in 1888 while Mr. Cummins was employed with the Northern Pacific Railroad. It is one of many homes in this area that were built on railroad property that was broke down and sold off into sections.
Theodore came to Mandan from Davenport, Iowa at the age of 19 when he was actually on his way to Glendive, Montana to find employment with the railroad. In Mandan, he worked for the railroad as a timekeeper, chief clerk, and as the first store keeper. His parents later joined him and engaged in the construction business.
Three years after his arrival and while still employed with the railroad, Theodore formed a partnership with a Mr. Granberry in the clothing business. When Mr. Granberry passed away four years later, Theodore left his employment at the railroad and formed a partnership with W. C. Tubbs in the clothing store. Later another partner, Mr. Thorberg, was taken on. The clothing store continued to change partners, but Theodore always remained a primary shareholder. Eventually the business was taken over by Theodore’s sons T.A. and Robert. The Cummins Clothier was operated until 1959 when it announced its closeout sale, which signaled the finale of Mandan’s oldest clothing store.
Theodore was not only a businessman, but also a family man. He shared his life with his beautiful wife Margaret, two daughters, and two sons. Theodore also stayed active in community affairs as director of the First National Bank, President of the Mandan Rodeo Association, and commander of the American Legion Post. He also had affiliations with the Rotary Club and interests in other civic matters.
The home is an exceptional example of homes built during this era. The workmanship and craftsmanship show how well built homes were during early years. They needed to be durable for the harsh winters, but also make a statement as to one’s social station.
