Mr. and Mrs. Benjamin W. Shaw’s home was contracted and constructed by Agaton Larson in 1918-1919. They resided in this home for 55 of their 57 years in Mandan.
Benjamin, a young attorney from Wisconsin, first came to Hillsboro, North Dakota in 1881 at the age of 26. Benjamin moved to Mandan in 1883 after his friend, Will Lanterman, purchased the Hager Lumber Yard. William’s sister, Georgia, later became Benjamin’s wife.
Benjamin began his law practice that same year by forming a partnership with F.E. Bowen, City Attorney, whom he later succeeded. Benjamin’s wife, Georgia, was connected to many well known attorneys and partnered with Judge S.L. Nuchols for many years.
Benjamin was probably best known for as Morton County Judge, an elective position he held for 32 years. He was the president of the State Bar Association and, at one time, served as County Commissioner in the early days of Morton County. He also served in the House of Representatives at various sessions as bill clerk, reading clerk, and assistant chief clerk.
Georgia passed away in 1939 and Benjamin in 1940. They had two children from their union: a son and one daughter, who remained residents of Mandan. The current residents of the home, Mr. A and Paula Milan Olsen, purchased the home in 2004.
