The Flakker Home

This English Tudor style home was built in 1933 by Edward Flakker. Edward was born in 1898 in Minnesota. He was married to Anne (no record of maiden name) who was born in 1896 in Minnesota.
Edward was 32 years old when he married Anne, who then was 34. They did not have any children. Edward and Anne came to Mandan in the very early 1930s. Edward worked as a superintendent at the creamery in Mandan, and Anne was a homemaker and active in church activities.
When they built their home, they only finished the main floor. Since Anne loved gardening year round, there was a glass greenhouse on the garage. The home was converted from coal to gas heat sometime during the ’30s, as gas was more efficient and less dirty. The home boasts its original oak woodwork, but the greenhouse has been removed to stop leaks.
It is unknown what year the Flakker family sold the home to Mr. Mike Berger, who lived in the home until its sale to current residents, Mr. and Mrs. Logan Holm. Logan is a retired Land and Water Conservation Contractor. He also owned Holm Construction for 40 years, is an avid pilot, and spends his time traveling with his wife to visit their children and grandchildren. Mrs. Holm (Jeanette) is well renowned for her many beautiful hats and well known in Mandan as “That Hat Lady.” She has penned several small books on life changes and also speaks to groups on the topic. Her last book was titled “The Road Guide to Life.” Jeanette also taught for 36 years at the Youth Correction Center.
The Holms have updated the home since taking residence there. The second story was completely finished in 1970 and recently redecorated. There is formal dining room, breakfast nook in the kitchen, a living room, office, two family rooms, nine closets, and a 12-foot by 16-foot closet and dressing room. In 2004, they added a three-season porch off the French doors.
The home has had three owners since it was built in 1933. It was beautiful at the time it was built, but it is a mystery as to why it was never completely finished. The Holms have completed the home, keeping it period correct, and are both extremely proud of their home.
