The Lanterman Home

303 3rd Ave NW

W. A. Lanterman built this home in 1895. Banking brothers William and Albert played a prominent role in banking in Mandan’s early days. Will was born November 24, 1854, in New Jersey and arrived here from Minnesota in the 1880s. Will and Al started Hager Lumber. They helped establish the State Bank of Morton County in 1892.

The red brick bank building that still stands at the corner of First Avenue NW and Main once also housed the Post Office in the back half of the building. In 1900 railcar loads of sheep were bought by Will and Al and shipped from Oregon to Morton County farms.

Will served as the President of the Commercial Club (much like our modern day Chamber of Commerce) for several years and was instrumental in bringing the US Experiment Station to Mandan in the early 1900s. Will took ill after returning from a tour around the world with his son Horace, and died June 19, 1925.
