This home, presently owned by Danny and Kris Scarborough, was built in 1909. The earliest history to date goes back to 1912, when the Chalmer Love family resided in the home.
Chalmer was born in Iowa in 1870. He received his education at the Iowa State Teacher’s College at Cedar Falls where he earned a Bachelor Didactic degree. In 1900, Chalmer married Bertha Beale, who was born in 1878 in Iowa. She also graduated from the Iowa State Teacher’s College. They had two sons.
In 1911, the Love family came to Mandan. Chalmer became the Superintendent of the Mandan Public School System and was responsible for the development of the system to the point where it was accredited a first-class school. Chalmer was an active organizer of the Athletic Board and he introduced physical education into the Mandan schools. He was also responsible for the introduction of music, fostered the orchestras, and found time to serve as the leader of the Municipal Band. Aside from all his work in Mandan, Chalmer was also one of the instructors at summer school in Dickinson, following the creation of normal school there. He was a member of the Brotherhood of American Yeoman, Knights of Pythias, Masons, Eastern Star, and the Presbyterian Church. Bertha was also active in community affairs. She was one of the originators of Chapter H of the PEO Sisterhood in 1915 and served as President of the Mandan Chapter for three years.
In 1928, Chalmer and Bertha retired from city life and moved to a dairy farm north of the city. Chalmer then served on the Missouri Slope Dairyman’s Association. Chalmer passed in 1932 and Bertha in 1962.
In 1928, the Theodore Thompson family purchased the home. Theodore was a stockman for the Railroad. The Thompsons sold the home to the John Kleinschmidt family in 1932. John was an insurance salesman in Mandan. In 1938, the Kleinschmidt family sold the home to the Obert and Helen Thompson family, who ran the Stereo Pioneer Publishing Company in Mandan. After that, the home was taken into possession by HUD and then purchased by a Mr. Severson. The Scarborough family purchased the home in 1993 and are currently remodeling it to its previous grandeur.
